A customer rarely replaces only one part over a system's life. They replace a chain of filters on a schedule. If you understand the stages, you stock the whole chain and become the dealer technicians come back to.
Most domestic RO systems run 5 to 7 stages. Here is what each one does, in order.
Stage 1: PP Sediment Filter
The first line of defence. A spun polypropylene cartridge traps sand, silt, rust, and visible particles so they never reach the carbon or membrane. This is the cheapest part to replace and the one that protects everything downstream.
A worn sediment filter is the most common hidden cause of slow output and short membrane life. Keep the FreshDrop PP Sediment Filter 5 micron moving as a fast-replacing consumable.
Stage 2: Carbon Block or GAC Filter
Activated carbon removes chlorine, organic compounds, and the taste and odour that come with them. Just as important, it protects the RO membrane: chlorine attacks thin-film membranes, so carbon is what keeps the expensive part alive.
Stage 3: RO Membrane
The core stage. Under pump pressure, the membrane rejects dissolved solids and contaminants down to about 0.0001 micron. Choose the element by input TDS, covered in the TDS guide. Stock the Eco Series for normal water and step up where the feed is hard.
Stages 4 and 5: Post-Carbon and Inline Filters
After the membrane, a post-carbon or inline polishing filter improves taste before the water reaches the tap, and a final inline filter holds quality from the tank to the spout. The FreshDrop F-6 Inline Filter Set and the broader alkaline and inline filter range cover these final stages.
Stage 6: Alkaline or Mineral Filter
Many modern systems add back minerals after RO and lift the pH so the water tastes less flat and carries calcium, magnesium, and trace minerals. The FreshDrop Zinc-Copper Alkaline Filter handles this enrichment stage. It is an easy upsell on any new installation.
FreshDrop Products Covering Each Stage
